‘The most important election of our lifetime…’
A good turnout of members gave a warm welcome to our candidate, John Bateson, at his recent campaign launch.
Introducing John, Lord David Clark described him as being ‘local through and through’ (the only candidate who could make that claim) who ‘cares deeply about our area and our party’.
John has already been out on the campaign trail, speaking at nine hustings to date, with more to come.
He emphasised that running the economy was not Labour’s weak point – the economy had been growing when the Coalition took power. Its austerity package had then reversed growth for most of the last five years. George Osborne had borrowed more than any Labour chancellor.
John said that the country cannot afford another Tory government and hence this was ‘the most important election of our lifetime’. He spoke movingly of the ‘social costs of the Coalition – food banks, zero hours contracts and benefit sanctions which were cruel and hit the most vulnerable’. He condemned the Health & Social Care Act and ‘Lib Dems who have gone with most Tory policies’.
In rallying the troops, John said he had ‘never doubted Ed’ Miliband. We don’t have the resources of Tim Farron (the 2010 election’s second highest spending candidate) but we have enthusiastic and committed supporters. Certainly members came away from John’s launch fired up for the contest ahead!
