Living up to its promises - Cumbria will welcome Syrian refugees

Speaking at a meeting of Cumbria County Council Stewart Young said:

"Today I am in a position to provide an update on the situation and am pleased to announce that by Christmas we will be providing much needed housing and additional support for up to 30 refugee families – this isn’t a lot given the scale of the crisis, but it is a start. We understand that they will arrive as family units.

I would like to reiterate what I said back in early September – that I remain proud that Cumbria is ready to offer a safe haven to families who have faced immense distress and suffering, and I ask for the public to join me in welcoming these families to our beautiful county."

– Councillor Stewart Young, Leader of Cumbria County Council

We understand that the council is asking anyone who wants to offer assistance, including accommodation, clothing and support, to email them at: refugee.support@cumbria.gov.uk
