Members of South Lakes Labour last night voted to nominate Jeremy Corbyn in the upcoming Leadership contest.
48 members attended the nomination meeting at Abbot Hall Social Centre in Kendal. Members were given 10 minutes to read statements from each candidate before taking part in a lively 30 minute discussion. A proposal from the floor for South Lakes Labour to not nominate a candidate was defeated.
The Lord Clark of Windermere, who previously served in parliament with Corbyn, argued in favour of Owen Smith. Other members spoke passionately for Corbyn, highlighting the socialist principals he has instilled in the Party and a strong sense of trust in him as an individual.
Following a brief recess the result was announced as follows:
Regret was expressed that new members were excluded from the leadership contest. Over 200 members have joined South Lakes Labour in recent weeks and a warm welcome was expressed from those present.
