PRESS RELEASE FROM SOUTH LAKES LABOUR – RELEASE IMMEDIATE
Date: 6th July, 2018
South Lakes Labour Party members recently discussed a seasonably “hot topic” – the issue was the parlous state of the Lido at Grange over Sands, and the proposals being mooted by South Lakeland District Council and the Grange over Sands Lido CIC to transform the site from a swimming pool into an outdoor amenity area without swimming.
Many members recalled enjoying the use of the Lido prior to its closure in 1993 and warmly welcomed suggestions for its restoration and reopening. Constituency Party Chair, Paul Braithwaite, said, “I remember many days spent at the lido, as a child. Open air swimming is now more popular than ever and if kept as a lido Grange Lido could be such a great tourist attraction as well as a wonderful local amenity.”
Labour Party members unanimously agreed the following resolution, “South Lakes Labour deplores the proposal by SLDC to infill the pool at Grange Lido with concrete and turn the site into an arts venue. We support the principle of the restoration of the derelict Grange Lido into a working pool which will be an attraction and amenity both for local people and for visitors to the area, thereby boosting tourism trade and local revenue. We therefore ask as a next step that an independent review of all existing feasibility studies takes place.”
Members expressed support for the Save Grange Lido campaign group’s aim to create a sound business plan for the restoration of the Lido site as a swimming pool with ancillary businesses. The future of the Lido site is due to be determined by SLDC sometime this summer, and if it is infilled with concrete the pool will be lost forever.
