Campaigning against the Cumbria coal mine Aug 2020 in Kendal

At our February meeting the following motions about the proposed Cumbria coal mine were passed unanimously:

This CLP requests that the National Executive Council puts pressure on the government to invest in renewable energy industry and green jobs in Whitehaven and Workington, making them part of the cutting-edge Pathfinder town as recommended to the Committee of Climate Change. The mine is projected to increase UK emissions by 0.4Mt (megatonnes) of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) per year. This is greater than the level of annual emissions we have projected from all open UK coal mines to 2050.

This CLP requests that Cumbria County Council reconsiders its decision to permit a new undersea coalmine coal to be built in Cumbria. The mine is projected to increase UK emissions by 0.4Mt (megatonnes) of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) per year. This is greater than the level of annual emissions we have projected from all open UK coal mines to 2050. Instead the Council needs to pressure the government to invest in renewable energy industry and green jobs in Whitehaven and Workington, making them part of the cutting-edge Pathfinder town as recommended to the Committee of Climate Change.
