At our all members meeting in June 2018 the following motion about plastics was agreed:

The Labour Party’s use of plastic

This CLP notes:

That the use of plastic when not properly recycled has a detrimental impact on our environment.

That the Labour Party is currently using a large unquantifiable volume of plastic and currently does not have a plan or strategy in place to phase out its use.

This CLP believes:

That the Labour Party should be leading the way and setting an example as an organisation that does not use plastic wherever possible.

Westmorland & Lonsdale CLP resolves:

That the CLP Secretary should write to the Labour Party General Secretary and Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to request that an audit take place on how much plastic the national party has used in the last 12 months and to come up with a plan of action to phase out its use with the findings to be presented to conference.

The CLP also wishes the Secretary writes to the leader of the Labour Group on CCC to welcome the withdrawal of plastic cups from County Offices in Kendal, to ask that a full audit with the view to phasing out the use of plastic be carried out across the County Council workplaces, and that a programme of staff awareness of use, reuse, recycling and disposal of plastic at home and in the workplace be introduced.

This CLP also welcomes the initiatives of local traders to reduce single use plastics in South Lakeland. We encourage all members to make a conscious effort to seek ways of reducing the use of plastics in their households and businesses.

It encourages members to share experiences of positive initiatives and to give positive feedback to businesses who are taking positive action.
